Historic Cities of the Sea: A Voyage from Seville to Venice
Destination:
Europe
Countries:
Spain, France, Italy, Montenegro, Croatia
Travel Style:
Small Ship Ocean & Adventure Cruises
Departure Dates:
NA
History is alive in the lands that border the Mediterranean Sea. In Seville and Barcelona, Marseille and Bonifacio, Dubrovnik and Split, every corner and piazza preserves a memory of the intrepid Portuguese, the conquering Romans or Moors or the vast seaborne trading empire of the Venetians. During this Mediterranean sojourn, every day brings a new marvel: the fabled Alhambra Palace in Granada; Gaudi’s creative, anarchic architecture in Barcelona; the dramatic natural scenery of the Corsican coast; the marvels of Pompeii, conserved by volcanic debris; stately Kotor, once Venice’s rival in commerce and trade; and the medieval splendor of Dubrovnik. And there is no better way to explore these cities and towns than to experience them as they were centuries ago by Roman magistrates, Crusader knights and Venetian merchant princes—by sea. The Corinthian II, is the perfect vessel for this marvelously varied and constantly illuminating voyage from Seville to Venice.

Coexistence of Cultures and Faiths: Christianity, Islam and Judaism in the Maghreb and al-Andalus
Destination:
Africa & Middle East, Europe
Countries:
Spain, Mali, South Africa, Morocco
Travel Style:
Small Ship Ocean & Adventure Cruises
Departure Dates:
3/12/2009, 3/18/2009
At a time when all of Europe was shrouded in the dark ages, a glorious civilization sprang up in the province of Andalusia in southern Spain and in the Maghreb in northern Africa. It is conventional to refer to this civilization as “Moorish,” but in fact it was a hybrid of three powerful cultural forces: Islam, Judaism and Christianity. The period whenMoorish kings ruled Andalusia—or al-Andalus, as they called it—was a rare moment in history when members of the three great monotheistic faiths worked side by side to build a sophisticated society. Our journey begins with two nights in Marrakech, where the exquisite minaret of the Koutoubia Mosque towers over the skyline, before we embark on Callisto and set sail for the Moroccan towns of Essaouira, Casablanca and Rabat before our excursion to Fez, one of the best-preserved medieval cities in the world. Crossing the Strait of Gibraltar into Spain—where the Islamic culture was already well-established before the Moors invaded the country in the 8th century—we’ll conclude our discovery in two of the most splendid cities of Spain’s al-Andalus: Seville, site of the Alcazar, and Granada, home of the incomparable Alhambra Palace.
