SALERNO | PAESTUM OR RAVELLO AND AMALFI | SALERNO

Today, from the port of Salerno we offer a choice of tours. Drive to Paestum, whose ruins, nestled amid groves of cypress and oleander, overlook the sea. Discover 6th- and 5th-century B.C. Greek temples in the Doric style and dwellings built of fine yellow limestone. Alternatively, visit Ravello, a small mountain town filled with art and enchantment, and Almalfi, a prosperous maritime city in the 11th century that clings to the rugged limestone cliffs. Admire the frescoes and mosaics of its 9th century Cathedral.

Day 4
SYRACUSE, SICILY

Syracuse, which sits at the head of a beautiful    bay, once rivaled Athens as the most important city of the ancient world. Discover the spectacular 15,000-seat Greek theater, among the most impressive to survive from antiquity; the elliptical Roman Amphitheater, one of the largest of its kind; and the Archaeological Museum, with its rare Sicilian artifacts.

Day 6
HERAKLION | KNOSSOS | HERAKLION, CRETE, GREECE

Crete, Zeus’s legendary birthplace, was home of the Minoan civilization, Europe’s first. A morning tour visits the excavations at Knossos, where the brilliance and refinement of the Minoans are revealed in the excavations found here. The largest palace of the period on Crete, Knossos is a labyrinth of corridors, stairways and chambers decorated with frescoes illustrating life as it was 4,000 years ago. Continue to the Heraklion Museum, where a vast number of treasures and artifacts from Knossos and other Cretan sites are on display

Day 7
RHODES | LINDOS | RHODES

Arrive in Rhodes, passing the two fawn columns that mark the spot where the Colossus, one of the Seven Wonders of the ancient world, stood. Founded in 408 B.C., it was here during the 14th century that the Crusader Knights of St. John left their architectural mark. Enjoy a walking tour, and after lunch, continue to Lindos. Meander through the winding, cobblestoned streets either on a walking tour or by donkey to the acropolis, built on a cliff 400 feet above the sea. Enjoy time at leisure to relax in the town of Lindos or swim at its white-sand beach.

Day 8
SANTORINI

Corinthian II cruises into the flooded volcanic crater that forms the great circular bay of Santorini. In the second millennium B.C., volcanic eruptions shrouded the island of Santorini in a blanket of pumice and ash, recasting it as a caldera and sending the Minoan civilization into decline. From the sea enjoy a beautiful view of Phira, a village set atop a 1,000-foot-high palisade. Take a cable car ride up to the whitewashed homes, shops, cafes and churches of Phira. Visit the Nomikos Exhibition, where excellent reproductions of Akrotiri’s Minoan frescoes are on display, and continue to the Prehistoric History Museum of Thera.
