Depart the US on your overnight flight to Portugal.
 
Day 2
ARRIVE LISBON
Upon arrival in Lisbon, capital of Portugal, you will be met and transferred to your hotel. Settle in and unpack or explore on your own.  Conquered by the Moors in 1147, Lisbon’s Alfama District dates back to the time of the Moors.
 
Day 3
LISBON
Take a guided tour of the Old Town including the 16th-century Jerónimos Monastery.*  Time at leisure to visit the Gulbenkian Museum, the Museum of Azulejos (Tiles), Oceanário or the National Museum of Ancient Art. B
 
Day 4
LISBON • CASCAIS • ESTORIL• SINTRA
Enjoy an afternoon excursion along the coast to Cascais and the seaside resort of Estoril. Continue on to Serra de Sintra, one of the most delightful mountain villages in Portugal. Tour the Castelo da Pena, a superb example of Portuguese Romantic architecture. B
 
Day 5
LISBON • COIMBRA • PORTO

Leave Lisbon and drive north towards Porto. Stop en route in the historic town of Coimbra, birthplace of six Portuguese kings and site of one of the world’s oldest universities. Explore the city at your leisure before continuing to Porto to board the MS Amadouro. B/D


 

 
Day 6
RÉGUE • CASA MATEUS • PINHÃU
Cruise upstream to Regua, through the locks of Crestuma and Carapetello, the highest locks in Europe. Disembark and drive to Palacio de Mateus, near Vila Real in the region of Trás-os-Montes, * where Mateus rosé wine is produced. Rejoin the ship at Pinhão, the center of the wine region, where the Amadouro will overnight. Enjoy a gourmet dinner at the esteemed Vintage House Hotel. B/L/D
 
Day 7
PINHÃO • BARCA D’ ALVA

A morning at leisure to explore Pinhão, perhaps with a visit to see the beautiful blue-and-white tiles called azulejos at the railway station or a stop at the Vintage House Hotel for a lecture on port wine and a tasting. Return to the ship for lunch and sail to Vega de Terrón. The ship overnights in nearby Barca d’Alva. B/L/D

 
Day 8
SALAMANCA, SPAIN • VEGA DE TERRÓN, PORTUGAL

Drive to Salamanca,* in the center of Spain’s Castilla y León region, and site of one of the oldest universities in Europe. A guided city tour includes the University Quarter, the 12th-century Romanesque Church of San Martín, and the House of Shells. Have time on your own before you return to the ship. Tonight enjoy a flamenco show. B/L/D

VEGA DE TERRÓN • PINHÃU

Tour Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo, a small fortified village on a hilltop. Lunch onboard. Cruise to Pinhão. On board this evening, entertainment by a Portuguese folkloric troup. B/L/D

Day 10
LAMEGO • BITETOS

Cruise toward Regua. Drive to historic Lamego for a city tour including one of the most important places of pilgrimage in Portugal, Nossa Senhora dos Remédios, reached by a 600-step staircase. In 1143 a council of nobles called the Cortes met here to declare Afonso Henriques Portugal’s first king.

 
Day 11
PORTO

Porto, Portugal’s second-largest city, gained its fame and wealth from the production of port wine in the 17th century. Visit the 16th-century buildings of the old quarters*, Baroque churches and the magnificent iron bridge built by French engineer Gustav Eiffel. Tonight, celebrate with a Farewell Dinner. B/L/D

Disembark after breakfast and transfer to the airport for your homebound flight. B
