Two young male lions rest closely together on a dry, dusty ground, displaying a moment of affection with one gently nuzzling the other. Their eyes are mostly closed, and their golden-brown manes are slightly tousled. Another lion is lying down in the blurred background, completing this peaceful and intimate wildlife scene.

Why Explore Africa by Small Ship or River Cruise?

Small ship and river cruising in Africa offers a deeper, more connected way to travel. With fewer guests on board, you’ll enjoy flexible itineraries, close-up access to natural and cultural sites, and daily excursions led by seasoned naturalists, historians, and local experts. Unlike large cruise ships, these vessels can reach remote rivers, hidden coves, and lesser-known ports, allowing for genuine interaction with the land, wildlife, and people. Whether you're gliding past hippos on the Chobe River, sailing upriver to Luxor, or snorkeling in the Seychelles, each voyage is designed to immerse you in the essence of place—without sacrificing comfort or service.

Best time to take a small ship Africa cruise

Southern Africa (Chobe, Zambezi, Okavango Delta)
May to October is the dry season, ideal for wildlife viewing as animals gather at rivers and watering holes. Days are sunny and mild, making it perfect for safari cruises and outdoor exploration.

North Africa (Nile River Cruises)
October to April offers cooler, more comfortable temperatures for exploring ancient Egyptian landmarks, including the Valley of the Kings, Karnak, and Aswan.

Indian Ocean (Seychelles, Madagascar, Mozambique Channel)
The best cruising conditions fall between April–May and October–November, when the seas are calm, and visibility is excellent for diving and snorkeling.

30 Years in Small Ship Travel: How an Industry Was Born, Where It Stands Today, and Where It's Going Next

There is a moment I return to often when I think about why I do this work. It was 2008. I was staffing a university travel event when a woman approached the booth — not to ask about a specific trip, but to unload a frustration. She had spent weeks trying to plan a river cruise and had nearly given up. "There are hundreds of options," she told me. "I have no idea how to compare them. I don't know which companies are reputable, which ships are actually what they claim to be, or who I can trust to help me." She left without booking anything. That conversation never left me. Because she wasn't describing a failure of desire — she clearly wanted to go. She was describing a failure of the industry to serve her. I had spent nearly 30 years watching small ship travel evolve from a niche for adventurous retirees into one of the most sophisticated, diverse, and rapidly expanding sectors in all of travel. That woman at the travel fair sparked a mission: build the resource that she deserved. What followed was Small Ship Travel.

Why Small Ships Are the Best Way to See the Galápagos

The Galápagos Islands demand more than a typical cruise experience. Small ship cruises provide unparalleled wildlife access, expert-guided excursions, and visits to islands like Genovesa and Fernandina that larger vessels simply cannot reach.

Castles, Cathedrals, and Cobblestones

River cruising offers a seamless and luxurious way to experience Europe’s most historic and scenic waterways, from the fairy-tale castles of the Rhine to the imperial capitals of the Danube and the artistic treasures of the Seine. Unlike ocean cruises, these intimate voyages bring travelers directly into the heart of medieval villages, grand cities, and world-renowned wine regions, allowing for deeper cultural immersion. Along the way, passengers can explore UNESCO-listed landmarks, savor locally inspired cuisine, and enjoy exclusive excursions, from private château tours to classical concerts in Vienna.
