A stunning glacier with jagged blue ice rises from calm, icy waters, set against a backdrop of snow-capped mountains and lush green slopes. The overcast sky casts a cool, moody light over the dramatic Arctic or Alaskan landscape.

About Alaska

Alaska’s wild beauty, glacial landscapes, and extraordinary wildlife make it one of the most iconic expedition destinations on Earth. From ancient fjords and calving glaciers to brown bears and breaching whales, this is a region best experienced up close—far from the crowds and conventional routes. Small ship cruising, on vessels carrying fewer than 750 guests, offers unparalleled access to Alaska’s secluded coves, native communities, and rich ecosystems, providing a deeper, more personal connection to this awe-inspiring landscape.

At Small Ship Travel, we curate a thoughtfully selected collection of Alaska voyages aboard ships that emphasize sustainability, enrichment, and exceptional guest service. Whether you’re drawn to an elegant expedition yacht or a comfortable, locally operated vessel, our team matches you with the right cruise line, itinerary, and travel style.

Exploring Alaska in Style with Small Ships

Unlike traditional cruise ships, small ships have the agility to navigate narrow inlets, anchor near glaciers, and access hidden bays and lesser-visited communities. With fewer passengers onboard, you’ll enjoy personalized attention, flexible itineraries, and closer encounters with wildlife and the natural world. Shore excursions are more immersive and often include Zodiac outings, guided hikes, kayaking, cultural experiences, and marine wildlife observation led by naturalists and regional experts. This style of travel offers a low-impact approach to exploring Alaska’s fragile ecosystems while fostering a genuine understanding of its landscapes, history, and cultures.

Best time to visit Alaska

The Alaska cruise season runs from May through September, and each month offers unique advantages:

May–June
Expect longer days, blooming wildflowers, active wildlife (including bears emerging from hibernation), and dramatic glacier viewing. These early months are great for birdwatching and quieter sailings before peak summer.

July–August
The heart of the season brings warmer temperatures and excellent opportunities for whale watching, particularly for humpbacks and orcas. Salmon runs peak during this time, attracting bears and eagles in large numbers.

September
Late season voyages feature brilliant autumn colors, fewer travelers, and the potential to witness the Northern Lights in the night sky. Wildlife remains active, and cooler temperatures lend themselves to crisp, scenic hikes.

30 Years in Small Ship Travel: How an Industry Was Born, Where It Stands Today, and Where It's Going Next

There is a moment I return to often when I think about why I do this work. It was 2008. I was staffing a university travel event when a woman approached the booth — not to ask about a specific trip, but to unload a frustration. She had spent weeks trying to plan a river cruise and had nearly given up. "There are hundreds of options," she told me. "I have no idea how to compare them. I don't know which companies are reputable, which ships are actually what they claim to be, or who I can trust to help me." She left without booking anything. That conversation never left me. Because she wasn't describing a failure of desire — she clearly wanted to go. She was describing a failure of the industry to serve her. I had spent nearly 30 years watching small ship travel evolve from a niche for adventurous retirees into one of the most sophisticated, diverse, and rapidly expanding sectors in all of travel. That woman at the travel fair sparked a mission: build the resource that she deserved. What followed was Small Ship Travel.

Why Small Ships Are the Best Way to See the Galápagos

The Galápagos Islands demand more than a typical cruise experience. Small ship cruises provide unparalleled wildlife access, expert-guided excursions, and visits to islands like Genovesa and Fernandina that larger vessels simply cannot reach.

Castles, Cathedrals, and Cobblestones

River cruising offers a seamless and luxurious way to experience Europe’s most historic and scenic waterways, from the fairy-tale castles of the Rhine to the imperial capitals of the Danube and the artistic treasures of the Seine. Unlike ocean cruises, these intimate voyages bring travelers directly into the heart of medieval villages, grand cities, and world-renowned wine regions, allowing for deeper cultural immersion. Along the way, passengers can explore UNESCO-listed landmarks, savor locally inspired cuisine, and enjoy exclusive excursions, from private château tours to classical concerts in Vienna.
